Pre-settled to settled status: Dual Nationality Question

Post by lyrics » Fri Aug 23, 2024 2:34 pm

Dear all,

I have an issue with a question on my application - whether I have got dual nationality. I currently only hold one passport, Bulgarian. I am, myself, born in Russia however my passport has been expired for two years. I have not renewed it since however I have heard some information that the Russian government is extending rules on renewing passports (I am not clear on this but assuming being born in Russia, Russian nationality counts and can not be lost?).

I am unsure whether I still hold a dual nationality in this case - I suppose my Russian nationality is still valid? And would they need a number of my second passport on the application?

Thank you all in advance.

You are still Russian, citizenships don't get revoked because your passport expires. Don't know how an expired passport for a second nationality would affect your application - perhaps include details of the expired one and see if you are asked for more details.

You are, indeed, still Russian, so specify that.

As a concern for the future, if you wish to apply for British citizenship, you might require you to send in your expired passport with British passport application, so they can make sure your names are aligned - if there are differences in names you should start the process now, as Russian passport renewal will take a good few months in this case.

Thank you so much all. I have submitted my application, fingers crossed I will have my results back soon. There was no question about passport details, etc just specifying the nationality. Also very helpful information about applying to British citizenship, thank you.
