its a no-brainer that all docs should be translated and originals should be submitted. however, there are two issues -

1. Translation: is everything that is translated (including birth certificates or smth secondary) needs to be translated and notarised?! Can an informal translation be done and attached?! I am an interpreter myself and have attached my translations on a number of occasions in the past, including for the purposes of gaining Irish visas

2. Originals: is everything (once again, primarily birth certificates) require to be original? British embassy agreed to accept a copy of my passport and the email from the Irish embassy confirming its authenticity; while my parents (EEA FP applicants) can provide their original documents, I cannot attach my original birth certificate.

The UK accepts translations by a reputable translator. Documents do not need to be notarised or legalised. (Other UK countries do require this). I would be wary of self-translation though I suspect this is not what you are proposing to do.

Originals are in general required, but if you don't have the original it does not follow that the application would automatically fail.
