EEA 4 documentation confusion

Could someone please confirm if this is correct?
I have noticed varying opinions on how much evidence one should provide.
Would 5 years combined banking statements alone suffice for evidence of cohabitation?.
and.. would a document showing tax activity from HMRC (returns submitted) for 5 yrs for my wife (EEA National) and myself (Non- EEA) suffice for evidence of employment?
I am trying to avoid sending large amounts of paper work and at the same time submitting confusing and incomplete records (utilities, tenancy agreements etc..)
I would appreciate any advice

You have to demonstrate residence not cohabitation although the latter would diffuse doubts whether the marriage would be one of convenience. Only the EEA national has to demonstrate economic activity (unless self-sufficient on the basis of the economical activity of the non-EEA family member) but proof of (self) employment implies that you would have to be considered as resident for that period. Banking statements are fine too but I think it is not necessary to send in the whole lot for a continuous five years.

Would the bank statements suffice for residence?
With regards to sending in the bank statements, should I just send in one page per month rather than the full statement?

Personally I believe that bank statements don't show anything except that you once must have shown some ID to your bank but the UKBA is fine with them. You could also go with a mix of documents randomly covering the whole period. You have to demonstrate residence for at least six months per year so a smaller number should be fine too and maybe not necessarily monthly.
May I ask why you have no work related documents and must rely on HMRC data? Five P60s (plus some payslips if necessary) would be a very compact format.

I could compile payslips and employment letters. I have most p60's.
My wife is a freelancer but has been working on contract for 5 years at the same place so she could provide a letter. I have also requested a letter from her accountant.
I was just trying to be economical with my paper work and felt that Hmrc may have add some governmental credibility.

If the UKBA doubt your work documents they can check with the HMRC themselves. I do not know if the HMRC documents would be less than what you have now.

Just as reference, people have submitted successful applications which weighted 180 grams including the two passport!
Make it simple. It will be easier for you and the case worker.

If both of you are working, then letters from employers (conforming your emplyment and presence in the UK) and/or P60s/accountant letter can prove treaty rights for our wife and residency for yourself.
