Hello everyone,
I am holding UK residence card (valid till 2016) as a spouse of EU national and would like to study (for 1.5 years) in Australia. Is it possible to keep my UK residency while studying abroad or will I lose my status here?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Your residence that leads permanent residence after five years will be broken if you stay outside the UK for more than six months. But you can return at any time if your partner is still in the UK exercising treaty rights.

If you went to study for a one of 12 months period, then you will be fine but 18months will break continuity of residence.

Check Aritcle 16 (3) there and the UK implementation in Regulation 3.
