What is the meaning of COA

sorry for the silly question
i keep reading that when people send their documents to UKBA they receive COA , what does that mean ?

Certificate of Application
It states that your application is under consideraton.
And (excluding some cases) gives you the right to rwork for time until Home Office makes a desision on your case.

Effectively, it is a receipt.

UKBA is legally required to issue the COA "immediately" on receipt of the application.
