I am a non EEA family member of EEA national residing in the UK. I got my EEA2 in October 2012. I am wondering if anyone tried to get PhD through typical research council funding while on EEA2. The rules for funding are not clear for EEA family members.

any experiences or stories around PhD for EEA2 ?

I have no experience for this specific example, but more general as a family member of an EEA national (especially if it is formally confirmed by a Residence Card) you should be treated as an EEA national yourself as well.

That includes the right to work, to NHS care, to social benefits, etc. and eligibility to study grants should also be part of that.

I have got funding for a undergraduate degree but for phd I have no idea .

If you are the family member of an EEA citizen, then you are treated exactly like the EEA citizen.

WOW ! i didn't knew about .. HOW COME?

i'm a family member of EU national since 2009 but i was paying international student fees ( have valid 5 years resident card )

Article 24 - Equal treatment

1. Subject to such specific provisions as are expressly provided for in the Treaty and secondary law, all Union citizens residing on the basis of this Directive in the territory of the host Member State shall enjoy equal treatment with the nationals of that Member State within the scope of the Treaty. The benefit of this right shall be extended to family members who are not nationals of a Member State and who have the right of residence or permanent residence.

2. By way of derogation from paragraph 1, the host Member State shall not be obliged to confer entitlement to social assistance during the first three months of residence or, where appropriate, the longer period provided for in Article 14(4)(b), nor shall it be obliged, prior to acquisition of the right of permanent residence, to grant maintenance aid for studies, including vocational training, consisting in student grants or student loans to persons other than workers, self-employed persons, persons who retain such status and members of their families.
