An EU national can be absent from the host member state for six months in every twelve without affecting continuity of residence. They can be absent for one-twelve month period for important reasons, such as illness, childbirth, work, etc.
Now, in reality, for most people, it would be difficult to be absent for more than six months without noticing. The absences were either very long or they were not.
I would not recommend being untruthful in the application.

If the absence was greater than six months and the reason for the extended absence was illness, UKBA would expect to see documentary evidence of that.
