Can someone please explain to me the fundamentals of:-
1. What is the difference between a Class 1A permit from a port of entry and a Family Permit (FP).
2. If a class 1a permit was obtained at the port of entry instead of the advance FP does that in any way reduce the likelihood of a residence permit in due course or make the process more protracted.

Did you mean to post the questions in the Ireland forum? (the terminology in your questions sounds more like UK issued documents)

Yes I did intend it for here.

However I am not too sure of the exact terminology.

Basically as a EEC member i wanting to to go to the border with my non EEC member with a view to gain entry. I undertsand that Class 1A permit (this may be for the UK) is granted at the border for a period to subseqeuntly allow a residency permit application.

Your topic should be in EEA rout, some one will move anyway,
To answer urr question, you can get stamp 1A at any port of entry as a family member of eu national, and it does not effect ur RC application, This 1A stamp is issued by UKBA, for Ireland they would either issue u 3 month stamp or even nothing, just let u in,

A Code 1A stamp is the UK's version of "obtain a visa by other means" (and not turning away at the border).
An EEA Family Permit is not really any different (just you apply for it before hand at an embassy / consular).


The major thing being: you might not get on a plane etc to the uk border without the FP.

If you get a family permit, then you know you have submitted the correct documentation, however, to be let in on a Code 1A you still have to satisfy the IO that you meet the terms of the Directive.

The Stamp / FP is just an ENTRY VISA. Nothing more. Both confirm the right to work, both confirm the right to enter. The ONLY difference is: A FP is issued for six months, the Code 1A might only be issued for a matter of a month, 2 months, ETC.

The EEA2 application can be submitted once in the UK, to which you will recieve a Cerificate of Application (see Annex A) that will either confirm your right to work, or not confirm - this is not refusing you the right to work, simply not confirming the right you do hold (if your the direct family member of a qualified person, you should have your right confirmed).
