UK Holiday (Surinder Singh route), German RC..EEA FP Needed?

Hi,
I know there's a sticky and I hate to double post but just in case this nudges anyone to share their experience - I'm a UK citizen, living and working in Germany and my wife is a Russian citizen living with me here with a permanent German residence card.
Having read the latest rules about not requiring an EEA FP for German and Estonian citizens I'm desperate to know if anyone has actually tried this. If so then we will give it a go on an upcoming 1 week holiday in the UK. If not then we'll be headed to the VAC for another EEA FP
