Returning to the UK with an expired residence card

Hello all,
I'm new here and I'm afraid I might not know the right terms and acronyms.
Here it goes. I have a Residence Card of a Family Member of an EEA National, it was issued 5 years ago and it will expire in August, on the day when my husband and children and I are due to go on holidays for a week to France. I should have realised earlier
I spoke to the Home Office and was advised to call the Immigration office to find out what documents I could bring with me to show them on our way back from France to the UK to facilitate my entry. I'm thinking marriage certificate, proof of address... I have not been able to find their phone number, they are not picking up the phone at the Dover port and I think that they are in Calais anyways (can't find their number for Calais
)
I have 2 questions:
1.- Does anybody know what documents I should bring?
2.- Any idea of how applying for permanent residence after the current card has expired will impact on my application?
Thanks a lot for reading!
