Hello All,

My wife is a German citizen. I am British.
After living/working in Germany for 2 years (me) we both came to the UK in Feb 2012.
We recently got married (30 Aug 2014) and my wife now requires a UK passport as her German ID card is in her maiden name.

After umpteen phone calls to the passport office and call backs that never happened. I am at a loss as to how my wife can obtain a passport. She has been living and working here since 2012.
What are the steps for her to be able to obtain a British passport?

many thanks in advance.

Hi,

If it's just a matter of having an official travel document, I think getting a new German passport/ID card in her married name from the German Embassy would be the easiest solution.
As for getting a UK passport, she would need to become a British citizen first to be able to obtain a passport. She can apply for naturalisation after exercising EU treaty rights in the UK for 5 years as she is married to you (British Citizen)...more here: http://www.immigrationboards.com/britis ... 95747.html

You cannot call the passport office as your wife is not a British Citizen , so there is no way that passport office can help.

Your wife may qualify to apply for Naturalisation in 2017, and only after a successful naturalisation application, would she then become a British Citizen and be entitled to a passport as confirmation of her citizenship.

At present she need to contact the German Embassy and see if they can change her details.

Have a look here:

http://www.london.diplo.de/Vertretung/l ... ber16.html (German)

http://www.london.diplo.de/Vertretung/l ... 0-eID.html (English)

The embassy's website tells you all your wife needs to do to obtain a new ID card in her married name.
If in doubt, just phone them up, they are usually really helpful :)

Guys.

Thank you for the replies.

Looks like we will have to go down the German passport route for now.

Once again, thank you
