I have recently been issued a Permanent Residence card and now plan to apply for Naturalization. I remember from friends who applied in the past that you can only apply for naturalization once you have held the PR card for 1 year but i cannot find anything relevant to this on the application and corresponding guide.

Can i proceed with my naturalization application immediately once the PR card has been issued?

I have been working in the UK since September 2007 with a 9 month gap in 2012 to fulfil my compulsory military service obligation.

No you can't. You have to have held PR for 12 months prior to naturalisation application.
