PR or Citizenship

A friend of mine need help with this tricky question
The question is He was married to EEA national 2008 he got 5yrs residents permit in 2010 and marriage broke down in 2014 and he applied to retain his right and he was issued with another 5yrs in October 2014 so my question now is that what can he apply for now, is it PR or Citizenship?

Your friend cant apply for BC now because he already divorced the EEA national and he need to apply for PR then after one year he can apply for BC.

Thanks. But must he wait till 2019 when his 5 years retained resident card expires or 6 years continues legal stay which i think guarantee a right to BC.
