Hi,

I understand that to apply for the British citizenship you first need to apply for permanent residency using the PR form.

On the form you have 2 options:
-applying for a document certifying permament residence (for EEA nationals)
-applying for a permanent residence card (for non EEA nationals).

As I'm French I am going to go for the 1st option.

The next step will be to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen (form AN). On that form they ask for the residence card number which I won't have as the PR application will only give me a document (if I understand correctly).

Am I missing something obvious here?

I think you are reading the form too literally.
Remember these are government forms.

The AN form is somewhat generic and used by lots of applicants in different circumstances.
The mandatory requirement for a PR card is new and was not rolled out particularly well.
Consequently the AN form is not very clear or well designed in this area.

When you have your PR certificate simply enter that number in response to the appropriate question.
(If not married to a BC you will need to have had PR for 12 months before applying to naturalise - that is PR status not necessarily 12 months holding the card/certificate).

I am a bit confused as I've seen in this forum that some EEA nationals received a residency card after using the PR form (and I would have expected them to receive only a document "certifying permament residence"). Example:

My understanding is they're BRP cards now. Not seen one recently though.

If its government-issued it will have a number on it.

I believe (I could be wrong) that EEA citizens are issued a paper document certifying PR, while non-EEA citizens covered by the EEA Regulations get a biometric PR card.

EEA passports already contain the biometrics of the holder and hence they just get a certificate stating that they have PR.

Non-EEA citizens who acquire PR get a biometric card stating the same thing. That way, their biometric data can be captured and processed under EEA law without affecting their non-EEA passport.

Interestingly I didn't have a biometric passport when I got this. I do now, however.

Thanks ohara. Very useful. I see you receive the letter in January this year. When did you send them the form? Also did you receive all the original documents back or did you have to request them?

They received my application on 9th December, took my payment the following day, sent an email confirming my application on the 31st, I requested my passport back on 15th January, received it on 21st, then the DCPR arrived with the rest of my supporting documents on 11th February but the letter was dated 22nd January.
