Hi, currently in the process of applying for a residence card for my (non-EEA) wife on the basis of my (EU citizen) permanent residence. I'm applying based on a qualifying period between 2009 and 2014, when I worked continuously for 5 years. For most of my employers I have plenty of evidence of employment, including P60s, payslips, bank statements etc. However, for the first two employers, which cover the first 6 months of the qualifying period, I only have letters from the employers. Since this was in 2009, I have lost all payslips and P60s, and the employers have also only been able to provide me with the letters. I have since changed banks twice, and the bank I was a customer of at that time does not give you access to old bank statements if the account was closed over 5 years ago.

So my question is: Will the letters be enough as evidence for this 6 month period, or is there anything else I can add as evidence? Should I ask the employers to add something in their letters about being unable to retrieve old payslips?

Yes, a note from employer (and cover note from you) to explain the lack of payslips may help.

Are you still a qualified person?

If you find it difficult to provide evidence covering the entire 5-year period but your sponsor is still a qualified person (worker, self-employed, self-sufficient, student, jobseeker), you can provide evidence to show that they’re currently a qualified person instead

We're applying based on my having already achieved permanent residence because I'm currently a student (back at university after being employed for years), but without CSI. If this application fails (e.g. if they don't accept the proof of employment without payslips) I think I can get CSI and apply again as a currently qualified person though.

Do you have a foreign-issued EHIC? - that would cover you for CSI.
But then again dependent would need CSI too. Doh.

If you can show you have acquired PR status already then no need to be a qp anymore so I see where you're coming from.
