Serious question: what's the point of applying for a DCPR?

This is a serious question, no trolling intended.

Apart from for the purpose of then applying for British citizenship, if you're an EU national, why go for the painful process of applying for a document certifying permanent residency, now that the UK is going to formalise the process of leaving the EU?

If it is true that EU citizens in this country will probably be given indefinite leave to remain at one point, what would holding a DCPR give as a bargaining chip?

I'm wondering if it's a better strategy to just wait and see what happens, rather than engaging in a process that might take months, during which I'd have no access to the original documents.

What is the panel's view?

Anyone still in flight on an EU migration trajectory is going to be in the hands of others if they don't complete their migration journey 'soon'.

Any EU-related transitional arrangement is typically based on holding relevant documentation at a critical time. (All unknown quantities at this time ofcourse).

However having a RC or DCPR (rather than 'nothing' or just an unstamped EU passport and a love of fish and chips to show for your sojourn in UK) could just swing it for you;
for a mere £65 it could prove a prudent and worthwhile investment.

I get your point.I'm just worried that my original documents will be with the home office for a few months (probably 5 or more). In the meantime the government might decide to give some kind of arrangement based on something different from just a DCPR and I'd have no access to my paperwork.
