Permanent Residence 180 days of absence question

Hi,
i have a friend who had 8 years in UK used to work the first 5 years without anyproblem and without any absence for more than 6 month per each calnder year every year just few weeks and total 48 days from 2009 MAY to 2014 May, but from 2014 May to 2014 Nov he travled to spain for more than 6 months i think even he left his job for this period of time .
the question is can he apply for his PR now ?
