Non-Eu children

HI,
This about a child not son of the EU but son of the non-Eu spouse. both in UK and now 4 years in Uk with resident permit.
Wife has a problem and needs to leave UK to her home country for 2 years. What is the situation of the son?
Is he allowed to remain with step father under Eu rules? or does he has to leave the Uk? Is there any Eu directive you can point me to>?
