Entering the UK from EU national gates as a Non_EU with RC.

Has anyone entered the UK from EU national gates instead of other nationalties gates at any airport using their RC issued in the UK?
We arrived at Gatwick airport last Wednesday. I asked my wife (she is BG citizen) to use ''other nationalities'' gates as a family. The officer looked at our RCs (the children and me) and said we didn't need to use that passport check and advised us to use ''EU nationals'' side next time. We have ''residence card of a family member of a union citizen''.

Thanks

I am Italian citizen, my wife is non EEA and having a residence card, we always use EU lines either in UK or in any other EU countries where she can travel without visa if travelling with me. Yesterday we arrived in Italy and we followed EU nationals, the border officer looked her RC, stamped her passport (he should not do but it’s ok) and let us go.
