Renewing eea family permit

My wife (indian passport) got an eea family permit in january and its going to expire this month, should she apply for another eea family permit or go for the residence card?
im from italy and got italian passport and working here since january 2017, i also need a residence card if she wants to apply for the residence card through me??

my wife came here with an eea family permit of 6 months expriing this month, i have italian passport but i work here and live here with all address proof and payslips. Do i need to have a residence card to make a residence card application for my wife? or i just send my passport along?
