Getting a mortgage while waiting for PR

Hi i wondered if someone can help.
I'm a spanish citizen and my husband is Argentinean, we have been in the UK for just over 5 years so we made the application for my husband to obtain his PR.
We are trying to get a mortgage but we have been asked if he has the right to remain.
For what I've read and undestood in the immigration pages a non eea direct family member has the right to remain automatically after 5 consecutive years living here. His status does not change even if he's 5 year residency has expired
The PR is not mandatory and it's more needed for travelling and in case his employer doubts his rights.
We have received a letter for immigration confirming his ritgh to live and work while his PR comes through.
Can someone please let me know if he's still a legal resident with remain to stay?
If so why are lenders requesting his PR ?

If so why are lenders requesting his PR ? Because the mortgage provider needs to see visual proof of his residency. They won't simply take his word.

During all those years, has ever had a residence card issued?

We obtained a mortgage last year, me being a Colombian citizen with a 5-year residence card (not permanent residence yet), and French unmarried partner. Barclays accepted this.

Different lenders demand different things, for example, we both had to be EU nationals for qualifying for a mortgage with HSBC. We did not even bother.

What you are saying gives me hope ;)
I will speak with Barclays.
