RC/EU Family Permit for US Marrying EU

Hi everyone -
I am currently in the UK on a Tier 4 visa, which expires on 30/01/19.
I am marrying my partner next month. He is Irish and has been working in the UK for the past four years.
My questions are as follow:
1) Can I apply directly for a RC once we're married?
2) Once I've applied do I still need to leave at the end of January when my visa expires or is there an extension?
3)If yes, should I just apply for the EU family permit first? Also can I get my passport back in time?
I'm fairly sure I will have to leave at the end of January, I just want to confirm that my visa won't be extended while I apply for a RC and I can't find a clear answer anywhere. My partner called the Home Office's EU Contact Line today and wasn't given much help. Thanks!
