Can I use EEA route to bring spouse to northern ireland

Hi I was born and spent all my life in Northern Ireland but I have an Irish passport so can I use the EEA route to bring my spouse here my solicitor says I can't and have to get a British passport I had a British passport before which expired in 1999 would be greatfull for any advice

So you are/remain a British citizen - even if your passport is expired. British citizens can't sponsor under EU regulations.

Thank you so there is no way I can use my right to be an Irish citizen

That is my understanding - if there are any specific rules in the context NI/Eire and the Common Travel Area then someone else has to comment on this. Spouse is Non-EEA presumably.

There is a way, but you will need to renounce your British citizenship and become solely an Irish citizen, then you can apply under EU rules.
