EEA Route, what now?

Hi!
I'm a UK citizen, my wife is American. We lived in Ireland for 2.5 years after getting married, she got confirmed for an EEA Family Permit to live and work in the UK for 6 months. The visa got confirmed and we moved within 3 weeks of hearing a response. The visa is due to expire on May 23rd.
What we are confused on:
1) When the visa expires, if we're waiting to hear back on an application for a residence card, does she get deported?
2) If we fail the application for a residence card, does she get deported?
3) Is the residence card the best route for us to be taking?
Thank you to anyone who responds. Help is appreciated.
