EEA Family Permit (EFM) to Residence Card

Hello,
I currently hold an EEA Family Permit as an extended family member (unmarried partner). I received this on 15 January and am now in the UK working. As it's good for 6 months, I had originally planned on applying for a residence card during this time. However, I've been confused reading current material from the Home Office about the Settlement Scheme that opens on 30 March. Should I wait until 30 March and apply with my partner? Or should I immediately apply for a residence card just in case? Any advice would be great!
Thanks!
