You're right it will take forever, because you can't do it! EU Family Resident Card is for those on the EU immigration route, you're on the UK one, so doesn't apply to you, unless you switch routes, and you can only do that if you are an EU dual-national or you are exercising a treaty right in another EU state.
After a year on ILR he can apply for citizenship and travel and a Brit, short period or long!
