I am a romanian citizen and my wife is american. We both obtained our residence permit/card just over a year ago (as self-sufficient). My wife wants to work now and as I understand she is allowed to get a job (even though I am not), is this correct? Also, will she need to keep her private health insurance if she gets hired or will she be covered by the NHS? Many thanks!

I think you're right: your wife is allowed to work without restrictions while you are not (as long as the transitional measures for A2 countries are in place, so until 1 January 2014). Sounds very silly indeed, I admit.

Of course, when she will be working (and paying tax and National Insurance) she will definitely be eligible for NHS treatment.
In fact, I suppose your wife should be accepted for NHS treatment already (i.e. without having a job): try to register with a GP just showing passport and residence card.

she will be able to register with gp, I don`t think gp do any immigration check, but she maybe in breach of immigration rules, best think they can do is contact ho and ask the same question.

you could still be working as self employed. there's no restrictions on that. as in for the healthy insurance, you would have to ask the NHS and then if everything is fine, register with a GP
