Visitor visa for non EU spouse

Hello,
My hubby and I are wanting to go to the Uk for a short holiday. I have an Irish passport, he has a South African one. We currently live in Japan.
What Visa does he need?
Will it effect our chances of applying for a EEA Family Permit in the future?

She could apply for visit visa under UK rules but given that you are an EEA national you can easily avoid that and enter the UK via the European route.
The rules say that as long as your partner is travelling with you, entry without a family permit is allowed. However, given that the EEA Family permit application is free and quick, it could be better to have this. If only to avoid any problems with Stupid refusing to fly visa nationals (people who need to apply for entry clearance to visit the UK) who are not in possession of a valid visa. This is a common problem and relates to carrier's liability.

Japan is nice! Wish I was there.
Your husband should be able to trivially get a EEA FP. You do not need to answer questions about your work or his work, or provide any evidence of either of you having any sort of money.
You do have to answer the questions about criminal past.
Just the two passports and a marriage certificate, and a letter from you saying that you plan to travel together.
