I will be moving to London and need to figure out in which part I want to stay. I have no idea. Which part of London is best in terms of accessibility to downtown and prices for 2 bedroom apartment? I am looking for some average neighborhood.

There is no "downtown" as such.

If you have no idea where you will be working then make sure you are near a tube or rail station that gets you to a main station or interchange quickly.

You haven't said what your budget is.

Central isn't cheap and cheap areas are often worse than average for crime/dirt/noise/quality of life.

There are too many variables to give you a straight answer. It depends on whether you have kids or a family, what you like doing in your spare time, whether you will want to have a car, what your idea of accessibility is (5 minute commute or 50 minute commute), where in London you will want to be (e.g. different companies are centered in different places, so downtown can mean anything - if you will be working in Canary Wharf, the commute could be very different to working in Bank). The best advice is to get some temporary accommodation and see for yourself where you want to be. A commute which I find easy, may be horrendous to you and an area I like, may be a dive to you...

I think you have some good point, it might be a good idea to get some temporary place and get a more permanent one later. Is it usual to sign month-by-month lease, or would that be something unusual?

Unusual. Rental agreements are generally for 6 months (shorthold tenancy)
