Seeking Advice on the Best Immigration Route for My Family: Global Talent Dependants, ILR and Citizenship Planning

Post by joshg24 » Thu Jun 25, 2026 12:02 am

Dear Moderator,

First, I would like to thank you for your patience in reading what may seem like a lengthy post. I have included the relevant background details to provide a complete picture of my circumstances, as I am seeking guidance on an important immigration decision that will have significant long-term implications for my family.

I would appreciate some advice regarding the best immigration route for my family and would like to make a well-informed decision based on my circumstances.

My wife is the main Student visa holder, and our children and I were her dependants. On 30 May 2024, I switched from being a Student dependant to the Global Talent Visa (GTV) route. However, my wife and children remained on their existing Student visas.

At the time, it was not possible for them to switch to become my dependants because of the applicable eligibility requirements. Once they became eligible, I was unfortunately unable to proceed with the switch due to financial constraints.

I am now considering switching my wife and children to become my Global Talent dependants. However, I have concerns about the impact this may have on their route to settlement and would appreciate guidance on the most strategic option.

My current understanding is that if I switch them to the GTV dependant route now, they would initially be granted leave only until the expiry of my current visa on 30 May 2027. This would leave them with less than one year on the GTV dependant route before I become eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

I therefore assume that they would need further leave in order to complete the qualifying period required for settlement. However, I am unclear whether they would need:

Two further extensions of three years each (approximately six additional years in total), or
Only one further three-year extension, particularly if I obtain ILR in May 2027 and subsequently become a British citizen during that period.

I would be grateful if you could clarify whether my understanding is correct and explain how the timing of my ILR and eventual British citizenship would affect their immigration position.

I am also exploring whether it may be more advantageous for my wife to obtain her own Global Talent Visa through endorsement, rather than switching to the dependant route.

Specifically, I would appreciate guidance on the following:

1. Whether my understanding of the dependant visa and settlement timeline is correct.
2. Whether my wife and children would require one further extension or two further extensions before becoming eligible for settlement.
3. Once I obtain ILR, can my wife and children continue extending their dependant visas until they qualify for settlement?
4. If I become a British citizen, does this change the immigration route they would need to follow?
5. Would they be able to remain on their existing dependant pathway, or would they need to switch to another family-based route?
6. Would my British citizenship have any impact, positive or negative, on their eligibility for settlement and eventual citizenship?
7. How realistic it would be for my wife to obtain a Global Talent Visa in her own right, based on current endorsement requirements.
8. The advantages and disadvantages of her obtaining an independent Global Talent Visa compared with becoming my dependant.
9. Whether switching my wife and children to the GTV dependant route now remains the most practical and cost-effective option.
10. Whether any alternative immigration routes would better support our family's settlement plans.

My objective is to identify the option that minimises future applications, costs, and delays while providing the most secure and efficient pathway to settlement and citizenship for my entire family.

Given the significant financial implications and the importance of making the right long-term decision, I would greatly appreciate a detailed assessment of the available options and a recommendation on the most strategic route forward.

Thank you in advance of your valuable advice.
