WP does not allow spouse to work ?

My husband is being offered a job by a UK company but the solicitor who is processing his WP for him says that it will not allow the spouse to work in UK.

Would appreciate info from anyone on this as I was under the impression that all WPs allowed spouse/dependents to work in UK.

the spouse of a work permit holder is allowed to take up employment in the UK. You will need to apply for a dependent visa.

Marka is right. I however wonder if the spouse can conduct his/her own business in the UK. Does that qualify as "Lawful Employment" as defined by the Secretary of State?

It is a good issue that you raised.

If you go through the law and policy section of the Home Office site, it does tell you how the rules are applied.

The answer is no, the spouse / dependant cannot engage in any business.
