work permit for US citizen

Guys,

I'm working in the software industry for the last 10 plus years. All my experience is USA based but for personal reasons I need to be in UK. I learnt thru different internet forums that as a foreigner, I need to have work permit or HSMP visa to get a work in London. I would prefer a work permit as it seems to be a faster process?? Anybody can share the name of companies who deal with work permit for software engineers/architects in London area?
