Settlemen visa for wife (US citizen)-applying from Pakistan

Post by hs159 » Wed Sep 20, 2006 11:15 pm

Hi all,

I'm planning to apply for my wife's visa pretty soon and I'll appreciate if someone can kindly guide me with my following queries!!

Here is some back ground information ....

I myself am a british citizen (through naturalization last year) and living in UK since 2000. My wife is dual national and has got both American and Pakistani nationality. She's been living in Pakistan with her parents most of her life and completing her studies soon and then intending to move with me here in UK. We're now planning to apply for her visa from Pakistan and my questions are

1) What documents exactly I need to attach with the applicaiton? I am thinking to include following but please update if I've missed anything

myside ....
a) copies of my british and pakistani passports
b) copy of our marriage certificate
c) copy of my property document (I own a flat)
d) utility bill
e) sponsorship letter
f) 3 payslips + latest p60
g) bank statements to show the savings

her side.....
a) completed and signed VAF2 form + visa application fees
b) reference letter from her medical school stating dates she's been studying there
c) latest passport size picture

I recalled someone talking about including our birth certificates but are they really necessary? to be honest, getting birth certificate from pakistan is a nightmare so i hope it is not mandatory to be included ....

2) And my other query is that how much time normally it takes to get the application through?

many thanks and i'll appreciate response from helpful people on this forum

I think most people are of the view, be over prepared rather than under prepared. You'll see other posts on this forum where people have listed all their documents, the lists can be quite extensive. My wife will be submitting an application soon and we've prepared a folder with a lot more than just the basics.

Others have answered your visa question. She should probably try to have her UK visa stamped in her American passport as it will ease travel around Europe for her.

You need to be aware that your future children born in the UK will not automatically be American citizens unless your wife meets the physical presence requirements set down by the U.S. for derivative citizenship.

Do you plan to live in the U.S. in future (maybe after your wife gets British citizenship?)
