British Citizenship for dependents outside UK

Post by buntosanya » Mon Feb 25, 2008 3:55 pm

Hi all

I will like to know if after obtaining British Citizenship in UK (if the day ever come, with change in rules every 6 months), are under 16 dependents outside UK automatically qualified for citizenship?

The fact is, I don't really want to bring them into UK for now; but if they have to be in UK in order to qualify for Citizenship, I might start thinking of a change in plan.

Thanks

British Citizenship for dependents outside UK

Dependants, born outside the UK, are only automatically British "by descent" if a parent was British "otherwise than by descent" at the time of their birth.

Thanks Vinny for your response.

If after obtaining citizenship, I decide to apply for them to come over to UK.
- What kind of entry permit will be granted to them?
- Is it when they get to UK that I have to apply for their citizenship?
- How long do they have to stay before they are eligible?
- If they come in months before I am qualified for citizenship, can i apply for their naturalisation along with mine?

Thanks.

Why don't you apply for them to come now, as your dependants? It may be more difficult as they get older, and may be impossible if they reach 18. Moreover, when a child over 13 applies for citizenship, the length of time the child has lived in the United Kingdom is also considered (Chapter 9: Registration of minors at discretion > Chapter 9 (9.16.18 )).
