Marriage visa requirements

Post by fjoey » Fri Feb 19, 2021 1:04 pm

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
I'm a British citizen hoping to get married to an Indonesian citizen. She has never been to the UK. Due to strict lockdown policies in Indonesia, we have changed our plans to get married in the UK.
I believe she needs a marriage visa and I was wondering if anyone had success applying for one. If so could you please let me know the documents we need, just so the application isn't rejected.

If any further information is required please do let me know

Many thanks for all the help in advance

Is the plan to get married in the UK? Then she will need a fiance visa, not a marriage visitor visa (which requires the applicant to leave the UK after the marriage). Be careful in choosing the correct one when applying online.

A fiance visa can then be extended to a normal spousal visa from within the UK. The spouse will be eligible for ILR after five years of the first grant of the spousal visa (i.e. the first grant of visa after the marriage).

Thanks Simon, many thanks for your reply. Much appreciated :)
I didn't realise that there is a separate fiance visa, although the cost is considerably higher than the marriage visa. The advantage of the fiance visa is that she can remain in the UK after marriage. Is that similar to a dependent visa? Till she is here for around 5 years and she can then apply for ILR.

The problem is, she intended to get back to Indonesia for a while after marriage to sort things out there and return back in around 3-4 months.

I've heard that such a break can cause issues in the ILR process when she comes to apply for it. Is that the case?

If we're going for a marriage visa, I guess she will need to apply for a dependent visa separately later?

Many thanks again for all your help
