Spouse visa renewal question on application

My husbands first renewal of his spouse visa is due in June. Last time for entry clearance we hired a solicitor however she is very expensive and we want to do the renewal ourselves this time. There is a question on the form and I am not sure how to answer it. My husband was here illegally and then he went back home and then applied for entry clearance and was successful.

The question is: What mode of transport did you use to come to the UK.

I don’t know whether to answer that honestly as most immigrants arrive here by boat, lorry etc. This question wasn’t on the first entry clearance visa. The only question last time was, why did you come to the UK but not how did you arrive in the UK.

Im wondering if we should just pay the solicitor again this time around but the total cost is £6000 every time we renew.

What was the question leading up to this? was it regarding if you have ever illegally enter the UK?

It asked have you ever entered the UK before, we click yes and then it asks for the dates etc. Then it asks how did you arrive in the UK
