Marriage Visa - IELTS results

Post by Patientlywaiting » Fri Feb 24, 2012 9:11 pm

Hi All,

I'm new to this site and hoping someone here might be able to help us with a question relating to the English language requirement for the spouse visa. My husband is from Israel and has just received his results for his IELTS exam and we're not sure if the results qualify as a pass in the eyes of the UKBA.

He received a 6 in speaking, a 4 in listening but only a 3 for writing and 1 for reading. The UKBA website seems to have conflicting information so I'm hoping someone here may have some personal experience.

The UKBA suggests that you need only be able to speak English to qualify but their list of exams and required results says you need a minumim of grade 4 in all categories (reading, writing, speaking & listening).

Any advice or experience would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks,
Patientlywaiting :D

They are only concerned with the listening and speaking skills and passing criteria ia minimum of 4 in both of them soyou sshould be fine with those scores.

Hi

Although the UKBA mentions that they are only concerned with speaking and listening aspects of the tests I would recommend that you also attach a printout of this requirement with your application to avoid any doubts with the immigration officer.

The guidance from the UKBA can be found here [http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitec ... icants.pdf]

I would suggest that you write a small cover letter to explain this mentioning that 4.0 of IELTS is equivalent to B1 CEFR level and 6.0 is B2 level.

Hope this helps.

Only speaking and listening required at present, but am sure they will expand this in due course to all 4 elements in the near future
