Starting a side business whilst on a 457 visa possible?

Post by supernaut76 » Tue Jul 07, 2009 12:34 pm

Hi all. This board is amazing. I love the power of the web and have seen some great advice on here already.

I have another query that I hope someone here can help me with.

I'm a doctor of Indian origin, recently migrated to Australia 9 months ago, on a temporary (long stay) business visa 457 working for NSW health in a hospital as a psychiatric registrar. I was working in London for 5 years prior to this. I would like to set up a limited company to conduct business on the side during weekends. This may involve consulting abroad, retailing knowledge information products etc. I was wondering what the in's and outs of doing this would be within the limitations of the visa I hold now. If this was disallowed then I would like to know what my options are with regard to setting up a business elsewhere. I aim to maintain my current position in NSW health during this time. Would be grateful if anyone can help. I'm really keen on setting this up.

457 Conditions

Post by MarkHoath » Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:59 am

HI There,

You cant work for any other person or company on your 457 visa and you also can only work in the occupation that is specified, due to the attached conditions.

Therefore you really cant do what you are proposing

cheers

If the OP was married, or in a defacto relationship, could his girlfriend/wife register the new business in her name?

If so, what would the tax implications be?
