Requirements to Prove Spouse's Functional English abilities

Post by psp » Wed Sep 06, 2006 6:43 am

I am applying under GSMP - Australia - Skilled independent offshore. I am on indian origin and working in USA. My wife has finished her graduation (MS Info Systems) in USA and had to take TOEFL and GRE to get into the university.

The GSMP application talks about a second installment for spouses without functional English knowledge. Can I show the US graduation/GRE scores as a proof of wife's functional English knowlege? OR is IELTS the only way accepted by DIMA (in which case my wife has to take this test now although she is neither added as a dependent on the application nor her skills are being included/assessed?

Please advise.

You should call the AU Immigration for confirmation of this, but from my experience with the AU immigration, if they say you need X, they expect X and not Y. I am presuming your wife is Indian and not American?

Yes your wife will have to prove her English even if she is not the primary applicant. If she is not the primary applicant, she is a dependent, even if you do not consider her so.

So I am guessing they will insist on the IELTS exam :( Or else you agree to pay for English courses for her on arrival
