BRP and New Passport

Post by azreth » Thu May 15, 2014 9:40 pm

This question may have been asked and answered before, however I could not find it online.

Basically I have an ILR BRP (Still valid for next 9 years). However, I have recently renewed my non-UK passport (I have not naturalised as yet so this is my only passport).

The question is, if I travel outside the UK, on my return can I just use my new passport and the BRP or do I need to carry my old passport with me as well?

Thanks in advance, any help would be much appreciated.

use my new passport and the BRP
Old passport would only be required if you had an ILR vingette in the passport.

New passport plus ILR BRP are enough for travelling.

If you had ILR through old passport, you need to carry old passport+ new passport+ BRP when you travel.

I am slightly confused now. The guidance through the above link suggests the transfer of ILR stamp/vignette to BRP. I have already got the BRP, do I still need to go through this. The leaflet given with my approval letter/BRP didn’t mention anything about getting a new BRP if I renew my non-UK passport. Could anyone clarify this for me? Many thanks in advance.

Do not confuse much. This is not mandatory to transfer the visa to the new passport.
If you do not want to transfer the ILR-BRP to the new passport, just carry with old passport too that's it.

Please stop confusing people. You only need old passport if your ILR sticker was pasted on it. If you already got BRP then you don't need old passport.

New passport PLUS BRP.

That's it.

The new passport contains the old passport No. with Date and place of issue & remain status (i.e OLD PPT CONTAINS VALID VISA).
However, it is good to carry the old passport as well for our safety at immigration point.
Have you travelled before with new passport only?

I have total 3 passports. 2 old and one new. I have BRP so no sticker on old or new passport. I travelled with just new passport and BRP. Didn't have any problem.

Thanks everyone.

I have called the Home Office’s helpline, and they confirmed that I will only need to bring my new passport & BRP with me. Apparently, the BRP is only linked to the holder (by biometric data, name, DOB & nationality etc. ) , so as long as the passport shows the same personal details of the holder no need to bring the old passport. Hope this is useful for other people too.
