Dutch citizenship by descent

Post by awelch » Sun Oct 04, 2015 4:24 am

How can I obtain Dutch citizenship through descent?

My father was born in Aruba in 1956 to a Dutch mother and a West Indian father. He moved to Jamaica when he was 12 obtained Jamaican citizenship and has lived in Jamaica ever since. Is he entitled to claim Dutch citizenship and, thereafter, can I claim Dutch citizenship?

It seems that your father can get Dutch citizenship, but that it will be prospective. That is to say that as he was not a Dutch citizen at the time of your birth, you will not get Dutch citizenship.

Having said that, if he were to reside in a French DOM/TOM (such as Martinique or St Martin), he could invite you over under EU law. Once he and you have stayed there for five years, you can get peermanent residence in France.
