at what point do you become British

Post by mariamuk » Sun Apr 03, 2016 11:52 am

Hello

I am curious at what point do you become British: when received approved application, after certificate received or after passport is received?

Thank you

After your citizenship ceremony. Passport is only a travel document.

Dear Chinho2k and others

As you saying that British passport is only a travel document, So will I be able to use me British citizenship certificate (received on ceremony) to apply for jobs etc & the employer will not ask for passport. Because I know as soon as you become british you have to return back BRP card to home office within 5 days then you can apply for British Passport which will take around 5 weeks I believe, so during that 5 week period Will I be able to use my certificate to apply for jobs etc.

Regards

Yes you can use your certificate as proof of right to work in conjunction with any other official correspondence with your name on it.

You have to send your certificate with your British passport application and you will likely only get your supporting documents back shortly before your passport interview.
