Council tax single-person discount problem

Post by Kountspear » Mon Apr 02, 2018 12:17 am

Hello, I have come across a bit of a problem with my wife's FLR (m) application and would greatly appreciate some advice. Her visa is due to expire next month and whilst filling out the application I have noticed that I have been in receipt of the single person discount for council tax. I completely forgot that such a discount even existed until today. I'm sure you're wondering how that's possible, well, I'm sure I read the first two or three annual council tax bills for the first few years after moving into my council flat but after that I started to simply file away any council tax bills without reading them, assuming everything was correct and so completely forgot. I have chewed my nails down to the bone. I really hope there is a solution.

Further information

-my wife is applying for her first extension of leave.
-we are applying under the adequate maintenance criteria as I am in receipt of ESA and PIP.
-we have since her arrival made two babies who are both British. One is under 2 and the other under a month.
-i receive child benefit for both kids.
-we live in a one bedroom flat and I receive housing benefit and council tax reduction and that blasted SPD of 25%.

What options do I have? I just logged on to the council website to remove my single person rate and it's asking me for the date for when this should be applied. I have a feeling that if I enter the actual date my spouse moved in with me, that it will present me with a bill that i can certainly not afford at the moment. I am also completely clueless as to the repercussions of doing this. Will it mean that my wife would be accessing public funds if I add her to my council tax bill?. We have not told the housing benefit authorities that we have two additional childers. How does that effect my housing benefit?

Please help.

I suggest you try to arrange a payment plan with your Council for the underpayment.

Please don't send me PMs asking for immigration advice on posts that are on the open forum. If I haven't responded there, it's because I don't have the answer. I'm a moderator, not a legal professional.
