Passport in new name (uncancelled passport)

Post by kjcy » Mon Jun 03, 2019 10:47 am

Hi all,

I’ve recently become a British citizen by naturalisation and have received my passport. I have changed my legal name by deed poll (new first name and changed surname spelling, as well as a changed spelling for my old first name which is now included as my middle name).

I’m going to apply for a new passport to reflect this change, but had one concern regarding an uncancelled passport.

I’m a former South Korean citizen, and by South Korean law, my citizenship was surrendered, and my passport rendered null and void with a heavy penalty for attempted use, the moment I was naturalised.

However, my voided passport still is in date and hasn’t been physically altered by the Korean embassy. My question is, does this count as an uncancelled passport, and do I need to submit it with my application? Just to make it clear, I only hold British nationality now, and was planning to submit just my current British passport.

Many thanks in advance!

As you lost your South Korean nationality, you need not to worry. Your passport is not valid as you are technically not a national anymore

Do you have any evidence ie a letter or email confirming your passport is voided?
You say ur passport is still in date meaning it has not been cancelled so HO would consider it valid as the passport could be used to travel to another country besides S Korea. So you would have to get the passport corners clipped by the S Korean embassy to invalidate it. It would not be illegal in the UK if you inform that you dont have another passport but you may be asked to prove it which is unnecessary stress.

Thank you very much to you both. I’ll just err on the safe side and get some confirmation.
