Change Of Name Before Naturalisation OR Before Passport

Post by Solarbeam » Thu Aug 22, 2019 8:29 pm

Hello There,

I am a bit confused here as reading different things from different sources.
After achieving my ILR last year this time I changed my name completely (work purpose) via deedpoll.
my bank account/hmrc on everything I am using my new name. so probably thinking about to apply for citizenship/naturalisation next month (ILR+1 year). My question is should I apply for the naturalisation with new name or should I apply for the passport with new name after the naturalisation. my passport and ILR both are with my old name.

Thank you in advance.

You need to change your foreign passport first and then apply for citizenship.

Most people only change their names after they are British. Ho likely won't approve citizenship and hmpo won't issue passports if your foreign passport is in a different name.

You do realise you were suppose to update your brp within 3 months of a name change.

After your citizenship ceremony, surrender your Indian passport (normally takes 3-4 days) and then change name using Statutory declaration by use of common law, and get it signed by any Solicitor and commissioner of oaths. Send that declaration with your surrender certificate and passport of-course with your first British passport application

But the OP may get his application for naturalisation rejected given he changed his name via deed poll in the UK but has not amended Passport/BRP :!:
