3 year marriage route or 5 year route for citizenship?

Post by maple » Sat Aug 24, 2019 3:57 pm

Hi there,

My husband is looking to apply for citizenship. He is an EU citizen and has held UK permanent residency since 2005. He has been married to me, a British citizen, since 2001.

Should he apply for citizenship through me via the marriage route, or through the 5 year route?

I assumed that the marriage route might be easier in terms of supplying relevant documentation.

Does anyone know which route is the better option?

Thanks.

He can apply via either route, provided he meets the specific requirements for that route (such as no of days absence, physical presence in the UK at the start of the 3/5 years period, etc).

Hi Simon,

Yes, agreed. We just thought there might have been pros and cons associated with either of the routes.

I figured the 3 year marriage route would have meant less paperwork to provide from our side - 3 years vs 5 years worth.

Anyway, it seems we would be fine with either, unless someone has additional information regarding either route.

Thanks for responding so quickly.
