Transport
Best means of public transport in Canada depends on the city you are in. Some cities have metros or subway systems, most cities have buses. Toronto also has a streetcar system.
Work
Immigrant students can work for 20 hours a week during the study term. During breaks such as the summer, a student can work full time. This is for a usual study permit. Your study permit will outline the exact terms of what you can work in and how many hours.
Renting
I found that the best of both worlds was to rent on campus for the first year and then find like minded roommates to move out with after the first year. On campus is usually more expensive.
Living Expenses
A part time job in Canada will cover reasonable living expenses quite comfortably. There is a lot of talk about Vancouver and Toronto being unaffordable though you might find that this is exaggerated. All depends on what your monthly spending budget looks like.
