Help with Documents - Proof of self employment

Post by bips » Tue Aug 13, 2024 4:47 pm

Hi All, Hope you can help me with this issue .

I've furnished all details in the online application form for me , partner and a child . Though I work for a company , since me and my wife are Directors of our limited company I selected multiple options (check boxes to select all that applies) on employment details - Employed , self employed and Director .

Now when i reached documents , it asks for the below for both of us

Mr X's most recent tax year account statement and corresponding HMRC tax return as proof of self-employment.

I can file the return and provide details , but my wife is yet to get a UTR , so can't file the self assessment (she started taking salary from limited company recently , 2 months or so ) . She applied for UTR , waited for 3 weeks , but no reply yet. I've contacted my accountant and he says , nowadays it takes months for HMRC to provide UTR due to some backlog or delay ..etc.

So I am stuck with my application , waiting for hmrc to provide UTR for my wife and then we file self assessment and upload the documents.

To bypass I've tried to edit the application and selected 'Employed' only and removed 'Self employed, Director' ..etc . My expectation was - now the documents will list 'P60' , P45 or something to show employment proof, and we both can provide P60. However to my surprise nothing appeared in Documents . ( ask for "recent tax year account statement and corresponding HMRC tax return as proof of self-employment." disappeared , but no new documents asked for employment proof. )

Questions are
- Is it ok to select 'Employed' and continue ?
- If 'yes', then why is the documents not asking for any employment proof , like salary slip, P60..etc
- If 'No', does that mean , I need to wait until HMRC to issue UTR for my wife (whenever it is) and file self assessment and attach proof . or is there anything else I can provide . ( we both have P60 for the last year, and recent salary slips ...etc.
- Any other suggestions/input to help will be highly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance
Bips

Your proof of residency are your passports (with stamps) - employment isn't a requirement for nat. so you don't have to prove that. If you are self-employed you are asked for the most recent tax return (as you don't pay director's NI through PAYE).
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.

No proof of employment is needed - though if one is self-employed they must provide the most recent SA302 and tax return. As you wife has only started her self employment in the new tax year she wouldn't be able to file until next year. I suggest you select only "employed" and explain briefly in a cover letter that you requested a UTR and are yet to receive it.

Many thanks. Now it makes sense . This must be the reason it disappeared from the list when i changed to 'Employed' . I assume this inherits to other applicants , as I didn't change my wife's self employed option, but still the need for 'tax document' disappeared from the document list for her as well when i changed to 'employed' . Will proceed this way as I already wasted months waiting for UTR. Thanks once again.
