understanding maintenance requirements for students and dependent

Post by tier21419 » Thu Mar 20, 2025 7:35 am

Hi All,
Just wanted to understand the fees and maintenance requirements for international student (applying from outside of the UK) and their dependents, that need to be in the bank account.
If one is doing PhD, so do they have to have fees in their bank account for the programme along with the maintenance requirement of £1,136 per month for 36 months per person?
and that would need to be in the account for 28 days.

If my interpretation is correct, that means that would be a lot of money to be held in the account for a family of 4 (e.g). for 28 days.

Many thanks

Where are you getting this requirement from? I don't think you are looking at the gov.uk information and application portal.

https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/money

You’ll need [...] £1,136 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London

https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/family-members

Your partner and child must each have a certain amount of money available to them. [...] They must have [...] £680 a month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London
I do not give immigration advice. I refer you to Immigration Rules, guidance, other online content and to your sponsor.

Thanks for the reply.
So if we take these numbers;
does that mean the student will need to have full tuition in their account (e.g. 15000).
and then if they have 2 dependents so ;

1136 * 9 (for themselves) = £10,224
and 680*2*9 (for dependents) = £12,240

for around £ 22,464 for maintenance only. Am I interpreting it correctly?

Many thanks,

or I have to multiple with the duration of the course (e.t. 36 months) instead of 9 months as I did in the above calculations?

Many thanks,

Given your ongoing concern about this aspect of your application, I suggest you get advice from the international student adviser at your university.
