Changing Jobs, unemployment period and ILR

Post by Independentkashmir » Sun May 04, 2025 10:45 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the UK on a Global Talent Visa (under the academic and research route). I’ve completed 10 months in my first job, which was an academic position at a university. After ten months job experience now i am looking for a new opportunity.

However, I’m concerned about how this change might impact my eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the future. I understand that I need to complete three years in qualifying employment to apply for ILR, so I still have around 2 years and 2 months to go.

My main questions are:

1. If I remain unemployed for a while now, does that break the continuity required for ILR under the Global Talent route?

2. If I later get a job that is not in academia – for example, in a charitable organization or a consultancy firm – will that count towards the 3-year requirement, or could it harm my ILR application?

3. Are there any key challenges or risks I should be aware of when transitioning between jobs on this visa?

4. My endorsement letter does not mention a specific "expert field" (e.g., although I am an economist, it’s not stated explicitly). In this case, how is my area of expertise interpreted by UKVI? Which types of roles might be considered outside my field and therefore not count towards ILR eligibility?

(Q4 is most important)

I’d really appreciate it if any experts or those with similar experiences could share their insights or advice. Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards,
Kashmiri
